Book Box terms of use
Last updated 30 September 2026
1. Who this agreement is with
These terms are an agreement between you and Book Box. They are not an agreement with Apple. Apple is not responsible for Book Box or for anything in it. By downloading or using the app you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the app.
2. Your licence to use Book Box
We grant you a personal, non-transferable licence to use Book Box on any Apple-branded devices that you own or control, as permitted by the App Store Terms of Service. If you share your subscription through Family Sharing, the people you share it with get the same licence. You may not sell, rent, or sub-licence the app, or try to copy, decompile, or reverse engineer it.
3. Your account
You need an account to store a library. You must be at least 13 years old. Give us accurate information, keep your sign-in details to yourself, and tell us if you think someone else has got into your account. You are responsible for what happens under your account.
You can delete your account and everything in it at any time from Settings, under Account.
4. Free and paid features
Without a subscription, Book Box lets you:
- catalogue up to 125 books
- use the AI cover scanner once, ever
A subscription removes the book limit and adds:
- 500 AI cover scans a month
- sharing a library with specific people
- publishing a public link to your library
We may change what the free tier includes. If we reduce it, the change applies to new activity and not retroactively to books you have already added. We will tell you in the app before a change that affects you.
5. Subscriptions, billing and cancelling
Apple or Google takes your payment, not us. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period unless you turn off auto-renewal at least 24 hours before it ends. Your account is charged for renewal within the 24 hours before the current period ends.
Manage or cancel a subscription in your App Store or Google Play account settings. We cannot cancel it for you and we cannot issue refunds, because we never receive the payment. Refund requests go to Apple or Google under their own policies.
Prices are shown in the app before you buy. If we change a price, existing subscribers are told in advance and the new price only applies from the next renewal, in line with App Store rules. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
If your subscription ends, your library stays. Nothing is deleted. You keep read access to everything you added, and the free tier limits apply again to new activity.
6. Your books and your content
Your library is yours. Titles, notes, ratings, lending records, cover photos you take: all of it stays your content and we claim no ownership of it.
You give us permission to store, copy and display that content only so far as we need to in order to run the app for you. That means holding it on our servers, syncing it to your devices, and showing it to anyone you have chosen to share with. Nothing here lets us sell it, publish it, or use it to advertise.
You are responsible for the content you add. Do not upload anything you do not have the right to upload, and do not upload anything unlawful.
7. Sharing, and what it exposes
Sharing a library with a named person gives them access to it, and editing rights if you grant them. Publishing a public link creates a page that anyone holding the link can open without signing in. Links get forwarded, and search engines may index the page.
You decide what to share and you are responsible for that decision. Turn the link off at any time and it stops working. Books you have marked private are never included.
8. AI cover scanning
The AI cover scanner sends one cover photo to OpenAI, which reads the title and author printed on it. It is often right and it is sometimes wrong. Check what it fills in before you save. We do not promise any level of accuracy, and you should not rely on it where being wrong would matter.
Do not use the scanner for anything other than reading book covers, and do not automate it or try to get around the monthly limit. We may suspend access to it if you do.
9. Book information from other sources
When you scan or type an ISBN we look it up in public catalogues, including Open Library, K10plus and the Library of Congress. That information comes from them, not from us. It can be incomplete or wrong, and you can edit anything it fills in.
10. Acceptable use
Do not:
- break any law, or infringe anyone's rights
- try to access other people's libraries or accounts
- probe, scan or interfere with the service or its security
- use bots, scrapers or automation against the app or its servers
- resell access, or run the service on someone else's behalf commercially
- upload malware, or anything designed to damage the service
11. Third party terms
When you use Book Box you must also follow the terms of the services it sits on, including the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions, Google Play's terms where relevant, and the terms of any sign-in provider you choose.
12. Maintenance, support and warranty
We are responsible for maintaining and supporting Book Box. Apple has no obligation to provide any maintenance or support for it.
The app is provided as it is, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not promise that it will always be available, that it will be free of errors, or that anything in it is accurate.
If the app fails to conform to any warranty that does apply, you may tell Apple, and Apple may refund what you paid for it. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation of any kind, and any other claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs or expenses arising from a failure to conform to a warranty are ours to deal with, not Apple's.
13. Claims and intellectual property
We are responsible for handling any claim from you or a third party about Book Box, including product liability claims, claims that the app does not meet a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims under consumer protection or privacy law. Apple is not responsible for those claims.
If a third party claims that Book Box infringes their intellectual property rights, we are responsible for investigating, defending, settling and discharging that claim, not Apple.
14. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential losses, or for lost profits, lost data or lost goodwill, arising from your use of Book Box. Our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim arose.
Some places do not allow these limits. Where that is the case, they apply to you only as far as the law permits, and nothing here removes rights you have as a consumer that cannot be removed by agreement.
15. Legal compliance
By using Book Box you confirm that you are not in a country subject to a United States government embargo or designated as supporting terrorism, and that you are not on any United States government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
16. Ending this agreement
You can stop using Book Box at any time, and delete your account from Settings. We may suspend or end your access if you break these terms, or if we have to for legal or security reasons. If we end your access without cause, you can ask for a refund of any unused subscription time, which we will pass on to Apple or Google to process.
17. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. If a change matters, we will update the date at the top and tell you in the app. Carrying on using Book Box after a change means you accept the new terms.
18. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada that apply in it, without regard to conflict of law rules. The courts of Ontario have jurisdiction, and nothing here takes away any right you have to bring a claim where you live.
19. Apple's rights under this agreement
Apple and Apple's subsidiaries are third party beneficiaries of these terms. When you accept them, Apple has the right to enforce them against you as a third party beneficiary.
